Blindness essay pdf

This is what the doctor’s wife says to her husband when she sees two blind men arguing over which of the two belongs to a certain bed. The doctor’s wife tosses out this phrase as she observes that the men resolve their disagreement by acknowledging that the real problem is that they are blind, not that they disagree.
In response to the blind man with the gun, who threatens her by telling her that he will not forget her voice, the doctor’s wife responds with these words, which, in the context of widespread blindness, are certainly disturbing. From this point on, the evildoers begin to suspect that she is not really blind.
The doctor says this when the members of her group are in the process of regaining their sight. He comments that he thinks it is possible that they may never have been blind; in fact, perhaps the opposite is true. Arguably, they are actually more blind when they can see, unable to realize how complicated and fragile the social fabric is. In saying that there are no blind, but blindnesses, the doctor states that all blindness implies not only not having vision, but not being able to see in a deeper sense; not being able to see what your neighbor means, not being able to see the purpose of life, etc.

Blind phrases

Although this book is not very much my style, I must admit that it leaves infinite learnings. Therefore, I want to share with you the best phrases I found reading it (in order). Many of these are not so well known on the Internet so it is worth spreading this post.
«If before every action we could foresee all its consequences, we were to think about it seriously, first about the immediate consequences, then the probable ones, later the possible ones, then the imaginable ones, we would not even move where the first thought would have made us stop.»
«Probably no one knows will have noticed how terrible are the cries of the blind, it seems that they are screaming without knowing why, we want to tell them to be quiet and we end up screaming too, we only need to be blind, but it will come.»
«Blind of eyes, blind of feelings, because the feelings with which we have lived and that made us live as we were, blind us from the eyes we had, without eyes the feelings will be different.»

Essay on blindness summary

«If before every action we were to ask to foresee all its consequences, we were to give it serious thought…. We would not even get to move from where the first thought would have made us stop.»
«You are a writer, you have, as you said recently, obligation to know the words, you know that adjectives are useless, if a person kills another, for example, it would be better to state it this way and trust that the horror of the act, would be so shocking that it would free us from saying that it was horrible»
Those are the sentences that I liked in this book, as I said last time, some will be missing or left over. You can see a difference, there is a sentence in bold, you may wonder the reason, and it is simple, in my opinion, this is the sentence that summarizes what José Saramago wanted to imply in this book and I repeat, in my opinion.
