Published in Madrid in 1613, the ‘Novelas ejemplares’ belong to the period in which the creative maturity of Miguel de Cervantes (1547-1616) reached its full expansion and opened, together with ‘Don Quixote’, the way to modern literature. Published in Madrid in 1613, the ‘Novelas ejemplares’ belong to the period in which the creative maturity of Miguel de Cervantes (1547-1616) reached its full expansion and opened, together with ‘Don Quixote’, the way to modern literature. EL LICENCIADO VIDRIERA, who will believe himself to be made of glass and will speak truths, responds more to the buffoon or the philosopher than to the madman; with him and with his story the author creates a wonderful character to whom, paradoxically and very Cervantes-like, more attention will be paid when he is mad than when he is sane. A quick story, dishonor and recognition, LA FUERZA DE LA SANGER combines the interest of its vicissitudes with its formal perfection as a narrative.

Garbage In, Garbage Out: «The Best of Vidriera «George A. ShipleyUniversity of Washington «El licenciado Vidriera» is the eccentric story (rather than the story of an eccentric) of a protagonist whose life and personal qualities, in every way exemplary, are neglected by his narrator. The latter lends his pen and devotes two thirds of his story to recall and eternalize a disorganized anthology of the absurdities to which Vidriera gave voice during a painful psychotic episode that was by no means typical of his life. The sick man becomes the spokesman and representative image of the community -aggressive, anxious, lacking in empathy, invertebrate- that torments him while at the same time, avidly approving his follies, crowns him bishop of fools. The narrator of the story (unworthy of trust) shares the enthusiasm and social estimations of the mob that persecuted the mad licentiate Vidriera, and composes his famous florilegium of clichés for the edification and entertainment of readers of his own kind. Miguel de Cervantes, on the other hand, writes for a different purpose.
