To complete the description, Legrand takes a piece of paper from his coat and sketches the creature. When the narrator takes the paper, he comments to Legrand that, if this is an accurate representation, the beetle looks more like a skull than anything else, as he can’t even find its antennae. Legrand insists that he drew it with great clarity, but when he retrieves the drawing, his face instantly turns pale. Thereafter, he remains for a long time self-absorbed, poring over the paper, and finally locks it in a drawer. As his friend’s attitude suddenly changed and he remains silent for the rest of the night, the narrator decides to leave.
After spending weeks translating the symbols, he finally managed to decipher the message: it was a set of instructions that led him to various places on the island until he finally found the skull tree. At this point, the presence of the beetle was irrelevant, but since he was angry with his friends because they thought him crazy, he used it to annoy them. At the end of the story, the narrator asks Legrand about the presence of the skeletons. To this, his friend replies that surely Kidd must have killed them after they helped him to keep the location of the treasure secret.
