Analisis literario poema sonatina

Sonatina poem analysis

The poem «Sonatina» comes from the book Prosas profanas (Buenos Aires, 1896). This book is the second great title of Rubén Darío’s poetry collections. It is a technically perfect poem, thematically novel and very attentive to the musical and chromatic effects of the poem, that is, to the sensorial components. Mythological themes, of Greco-Latin classicism, of 17th and 18th century Versaillesque France, etc., used as a text or as a pretext to communicate one’s own feelings, are the predominant ones. These characteristics are clearly manifested in the poem we are going to analyze.
The poem tells a complete story, focusing on the subjective and intimate aspects of the protagonist, a princess who is sad; in this sense, we are dealing with a narrative poem, but with a strong emotional content.  The first stanza presents the protagonist, a sad princess who no longer smiles; she has lost her laughter, her color and her desire to play her harpsichord (a musical instrument with a keyboard and plucked strings). In solidarity with her, a flower wilts in a glass, forgotten, like the princess herself. This scene is interior.
